Antique North/East African Leather Kitab Amulets & Venetian Trade Bead Necklace

$400.00

This ethnographic necklace is composed of three prominent, hand-crafted leather amulets strung on a simple leather thong. The rectangular amulets, constructed from a deep maroon-dyed leather, are tooled with a geometric starburst motif and are wrapped at the sides with a contrasting natural-toned leather. Such amulet cases, often containing protective verses or materials, are found in various nomadic and tribal cultures across North and East Africa, including but not limited to regions within Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, and Nigeria.
The necklace is further adorned with a collection of antique beads. These include polychrome glass beads, exhibiting patterns consistent with Venetian ‘Millefiori’ trade beads, which were a significant currency and decorative item in historical trade routes. Terracotta or clay beads, in barrel and disc shapes, act as spacers. The piece displays considerable age and wear, with a developed patina on the leather and surface abrasions on the beads, all attesting to its history and use. The closure is a traditional adjustable leather tie.

HO Note: This is a very special historical piece for a collector – this is most definitely in the Antique category, thanks to the British Museum online collections I have been able to find matches in the countries noted above in the description re: type/tone of leather and white leather binding. These amulets often contain prayers or spiritual writings, created for a particular person.
